Introducing the Young Hydrologic Society of Greece
The Greek Young Hydrological Society was founded in 2024 to establish a dynamic and supportive network of early-career scientists united by a shared passion about hydrology and water related topics.

Hydrology in Greece could be characterized as a complex -yet fascinating- field due to its varied climate and diversity of topographical features. However, in recent years, Greece faces several pressing water-related challenges including prolonged droughts, extreme flood events, unsustainable groundwater extraction, as well as water quality issues.
Given all these challenges, the mission of Greek YHS is to bring together young hydrologists from different backgrounds and strengthen knowledge exchange. We believe that a dynamic network of young researchers from different universities, institutes, the public or private sector, would be the basis for strong interdisciplinary collaboration which will enhance the understanding of Greece's water problems, while promoting innovative solutions.
Our Goals!
Our goal as YHS of Greece is to contribute to these problems not only by fostering ideas exchange among professionals but also by raising public awareness ,while promoting citizen science.
To bridge the gap between professional researchers and the public, we are planning to organize various seminars, conferences, workshops and educational programs that will be open to everyone. These activities can take place throughout the year and aim to inform people about various hydrological topics and urgent problems.
Furthermore, we aim to provide networking opportunities to young researchers, while the Greek YHS serves as the link with the broader scientific community. As we focus on professional development, we would provide help and guidance to young researchers through mentoring programs that will empower them to play an active role in addressing water-related challenges.
Our first meeting!
On November 26th, the Young Hydrological Society of Greece held its first online meeting, bringing together all the interested early-career scientists.

The session began with an engaging round of introductions, where the members had the chance to introduce themselves, share their research interests and express their expectations from the society.
At the moment, our members have expertise in hydrology, isotope hydrology, civil and environmental engineering, hydrogeology etc. Their educational background varies from master's and PhD students to post-doctoral researchers and professionals in the industry. While most participants were based in Greece, some joined from abroad, connecting from Germany, Switzerland, and the United States, further enriching the society's international dimension.
Several participants proposed exciting ideas for future activities, highlighting the group's shared commitment to knowledge exchange and collaboration and the willingness for active contribution to the society's activities.
Most definitely, this wasn't a meeting where one just gets an idea; it was the initiation of an exciting journey for YHS-GR members into a bright platform of learning, collaboration, and impact.
